Group Controller

Remote - US

We’re looking for an exceptional finance leader with deep insurance experience who is excited to help us build a cutting-edge finance function for our company: a fast-growing premier insurance provider that brings together the best of insurance expertise and technology. We’re looking for someone who can bring to bear their experience in an established insurance carrier, operating at scale, but who can thrive in a startup environment, shaping important aspects of our infrastructure, and a key chapter in our growth story as the company scales over the coming years.

While the initial responsibilities are outlined below, there’s plenty of room for the role to evolve as we continue to expand and build out the team together.

About the Role

General Responsibilities

  • As our Controller you will play a critical role in building out and then overseeing the company's accounting operations and financial reporting.
  • You will report directly to the CFO, making and shaping key decisions on people, systems and processes for our business.
  • You will be responsible for ensuring accurate financial statements, managing the month-end and year-end closing processes and maintaining strong internal controls.
  • You will also oversee, at least initially, tax and regulatory compliance from finance, including the design of appropriate organizational policies to manage our principal financial risks
  • You will provide exceptional customer service to internal and external stakeholders.

Team Leadership & Development

  • Build our team of accounting professionals from the ground up, fostering a collaborative and high-performance culture across internal and outsourced resources.
  • Keep up to date with relevant developments in accounting policy and practice for insurers while also being engaged in, and fully participating in what we are trying to build at pace across our company.

Accounting Operations

  • Manage our day-to-day accounting activities, including the establishment of a new general ledger and efficient accounting rules engine, and accounts payable/receivable.
  • Oversee the reconciliation of accounts and resolve discrepancies.
  • Ensure we transition smoothly from accounting for the operations of an MGA and captive to doing so also for a full-stack carrier, and manage through rapid growth.

Financial Reporting

  • Oversee the preparation and accuracy of monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements in accordance with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP), Statutory Accounting Principles (SAP) and regulatory requirements.

Internal Controls & Audits

  • Establish and maintain a set of internal controls that are fit for a fast-growing and entrepreneurial company that is also a steward of shareholder capital and in a highly-regulated industry.
  • Lead our preparation for, and management of external audit processes including helping us select and work closely with our auditors.

Regulatory Reporting & Tax Compliance

  • As required, ensure timely filing of financial reports with regulatory authorities; and with our insurance partners.
  • Ensure compliance with insurance industry regulations, including statutory accounting principles..
  • Collaborate with tax advisors to ensure timely accurate tax filings and determine tax strategy.
